Bored Piers

Bored piers (concrete or steel) are the ideal foundation solution for structures where the ground is unstable, sloping or restricted by trees.

Piers (also called piles) are basically concrete or steel columns that support the base structure of the building - a bit like house stumps, but are much larger and deeper into the ground.

At Calconstructions, we use the pendulum auger attachment to excavator method to drill our piers. This method proves to be economical for clients as it only requires one of our excavators and the auger attachment and as the excavator is already on-site, the machine can be quickly converted back to a bucket to remove soil and other works where required. It also requires a much smaller footprint than a drill rig type, and is ideal for areas with limited headroom and restricted space.

Types of piers include:

  • Reinforced concrete - formed and poured on-site (most common)
  • Pre-caste concrete piles - inserted and concreted into the bore holes
  • Steel screws - screwed into the ground
  • Steel piles - inserted and concreted into the bore holes
  • Timber piles - inserted and concreted into the bore holes
